Welcome

This website is designed to help teachers of mathematics, whatever their background and experience, to become more effective classroom practitioners. It is for teachers in primary and secondary schools and colleges.

It contains tools to support teachers to enhance skills and knowledge of mathematics– skills essential to being an effective teacher. It is important to understand the level at which you are teaching as well as what has come before and what will come next.

The intention of this site is also to support and improvements in mathematics pedagogies. A collection of videos illustrate a range of different pedagogies used in high performing countries around the world – such as China, Japan and Finland as well as the UK. These examples are supported by a collection of papers which present good and interesting practice.

The website also provides examples of using lesson study as a catalyst for enhancing and sustaining innovation in the classroom. Enough guidance is given to put lesson study into practice.

Amongst these three key areas you will find detailed lesson plans, videos of great practice from around the world, tools to audit and develop your own subject knowledge.

The development of this website had been led by Professor David Burghes at the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT) at Plymouth University together with Derek Robinson at Bishop Luffa School, Chichester and supported by CfBT Education Trust.

The site has been created primarily with UK users in mind. The phasing of and location of particular areas within particular educational phases may differ dependent on curriculum requirements and geographical location. Despite this the content of this site will be relevant worldwide.
