An Unusual Incident
| Objective: | Looking at the data in different ways and exploring interesting or unexpected pattens are the first activities a statistician undertakes when undertaking a statistical analysis. The ÔUnusual IncidentÕ activity reinforces this. |
| Materials: | One An Unusual Incident worksheet per student |
| Time: | A bit less than 1 period |
| Instructions: | Students form into small
groups. They look for unusual patterns in the An
Unusual Incident tables. The class comes together
for a discussion of patterns found. The students are then
asked what the incident might be. Students should justify
their answers using the patterns found in the data. If no one has determined the incident (which is the usual occurence) the class now plays Twenty Questions, ie the students can ask the teacher twenty Yes / No questions about the incident. The answer is: the incident was the sinking of the Titanic. |
